Pre-K-5!

August 1 was our official start date for Pre-K-5! I'm so excited for this year. We have a lot of new stuff in place, and Bu is picking things up so quickly these days...we're in for a lot of learning!

Because I'm starting a "new year", we're easing into it again. Rather than doing activities in "units" or themes this year, I've set up a system to broaden Bu's experiences. Every day, we do a couple of pages in a workbook (to get him used to the idea of workbooks, in case we decide to go that route in the future for curriculum), something technology based (like online curriculum or watching an educational video) and something hands on. This way, he's experiencing learning from many approaches.  I always plan to keep the workbook to 2-3 pages a day this year because it's not his favorite, but I'll likely do less videos and more hands on activities as the "year" builds up.

The work online is typically going to be either ABCMouse or Time4Learning. I'm more interested in him becoming familiar with using the computer, learning to use a mouse, etc than I am about the actual curriculum. A lot of this year is about deciding that he's old enough and at a high enough level of understanding to try new things, so we can determine how he learns best and, more importantly, how he WANTS to learn.

I've set up a visual schedule on the table we work at, so he always knows what we will be doing and how much more there is to do. We're also working with "first, then" to help motivate him to do the work. His favorite thing is his iPad (filled to the brim with only educational videos and apps), so we do "first work, then iPad" several times a session to break up the work and give him plenty of motivation to get it all done.

I'm looking forward to sharing our activities again this year, and to keep you all updated on Bu's learning and progress. I hope everyone has a great school year! Let me know what you're all up to!

Whole 30 - Week 1 down!

I'm 7 days into my first round ever of Whole 30. I wanted to start this to jumpstart a healthier version of the healthy eating I already do. I like to eat mostly paleo, but at the very least gluten and dairy free. My body does not react well to gluten or dairy, so it's typically not very tempting to "cheat" because it's not worth it to feel icky for days just to have a bite of something "bad" (the exception usually being some sort of dessert splurge at Disney World or something LOL)

Even when I'm eating paleo, it's not very strict in that I ALWAYS have sugar in my morning almond-milk-latte. I also make concessions about eating on the road when I have to, like the occasional Starbucks "coconut milk" (additive laden) coffee or a bunless Whopper from Burger King. I'm fine with eating like that when options are limited, but I found myself making choices like that more often when I had perfectly good, nutritious food at home. I also know I have a bad relationship with sugar and carbs and general, and Whole 30 is a great way to reset your brain and your troubled relationships with certain food groups.

The first couple of days, I was HUNGRY. Even when I'd just finished eating, I wanted to keep snacking. I remember feeling that way the first week or so when I'd FIRST started eating clean/paleo, so I knew it was normal, but it was HARDCORE nonetheless. I was ravenous. My tummy wasn't very happy with me, either.

I'm currently in the midst of a (non related) chest cold, so I'm not sure how much of what I'm feeling in terms of tiredness and brain fog is due to the change in eating habits and how much is due to the illness. I feel like the food choices are pretty easy at this point, though. I'm not having cravings, I'm not particularly hungry...I'm having to remind myself to eat, actually. I'm super thirsty, but it's also summer in South Florida, so I think that's a given.

I had made myself a 2 week meal plan that I could revolve through twice, in order to stave off boredom and keep myself on track (because a failure to plan is a plan to fail, right?)...So far though, it's day 7 and I'm only on day 4 of the meal plan. I'm finding myself with so many leftovers that I'm having to freeze foods, even though I'm repeating my dinners for both breakfast and lunch sometimes. Maybe later in the month, I'll post some meal ideas or my menu plan...

I was nervous to start a Whole 30, but it's much easier than I expected it to be! 7 days down, 23 to go!

We're back!

Hi, all! It's been a minute since I've updated the blog. We have continued schooling but blogging took a back seat lately, since the household has been so busy!

We actually completed our Pre-K-4 year officially earlier this month. I will likely continue using tasks and activities from our themed Pinterest boards, so you will see more links pop up as the next school year starts up.

We are spending the summer in "maintenance mode," practicing learned skills so that we don't regress over the short (month long, approximately) break, and also assessing what skills are strengths and which skills need a little more work, so I know what to focus on in the coming year.

We're changing our format slightly next year...we will still be doing lots of hands on activities, but I want to try to shift a bit more towards workbooks since Bu is at an age where writing practice is appropriate. Ideally, each work day will consist of some workbook task (no more than a couple pages a day of simple, skill-appropriate work), a hands on activity, and some sort of "technologically" geared activity, whether that's an educational video or time on ABCMouse/Time4Learning.

I started an instagram for this blog so I can post more frequently in an easier format...feel free to follow along!

I've also got quite a summer reading list for myself, in preparation for next year's schooling. I'm hoping to share book reviews and my thoughts on the books I've read and let you know if I have found them helpful in our journey. This is what I'm reading this week. It's a short read, as it's mostly examples of task boxes...I think I'm going to be implementing a lot of these ideas for our hands-on activities :)

I will also be sharing general Disney World, planner, convention, etc sort of stuff on that instagram account...basically, everything I already share here!

Hope to see you there, and hopefully things calm down around here soon (summer schedules and all) and I can go back to updating the blog regularly!

Our Homeschool, Week 32: "Stars & Space"

This week, our theme was Stars & Space.Unfortunately, I don't have much to show you guys. Between preparing to go to Disney World and just generally dealing with a lot of bureaucratic stuff with Bu's insurance and prescriptions, homeschooling sort of fell by the wayside.

We did all our usual puzzles, color, shape and letter identifying, and educational apps. We just didn't do much in the way of space-specific activities.  I'll save this theme to pick up on at a later date, so no harm, no foul. Thus is the magic of homeschooling!

Have a great week, everyone! We'll be back soon to tell you about our Memorial Day activities!

Our Homeschool, Week 31: "Transportation"

This week, our theme was Transportation. We had fun learning about all sorts of things that go: boats, cars, trains and planes!

Above is a collection of books, puzzles and other materials we used this week. There's a magnetic board for a collage, a puzzle maze, erasers to use in a sensory bin, books and a coloring activity. Below, you can see how we used some of these items.

I bought 3 little plastic cars at the dollar store and used a piece of a box (yay, recycling!) to create this craft activity. I just put blobs of paint on one end of the cardboard and place a car in each spot. Then I encouraged Bu to roll the cars back and forth to see the tracks left behind. Then we moved the cars around the box and continued to roll back and forth to make this fun painting!

Here is Bu playing with the magnetic board pictured above. I just let him place the magnets wherever he chose, but a more mature activity could be to sort which vehicles belong on the road, in the water and in the sky.

Lastly, we sorted vehicle counters by color, completed vehicle puzzles, and played a matching game. Bu then took it upon himself to grab pegs off his pegboard to sort by color on top of his vehicle flashcards. Yay for self directed learning!

Our Homeschool, Week 30: "Mother's Day"

This week, we celebrated Mother's Day! Here's a look at our activities...

We worked on our color and shape puzzles (yay, interlocking puzzles!). We also started working on sorting by color on the iPad and did a new mommy-and-baby-horse puzzle. Also pictured above are 2 cards/crafts he made me with his therapists :)

We watched our Family Feelings Fun Signing Time DVD again. We also continued working on sequencing numbers and where they belong on a clock, and worked on painting flowerpots as presents for Bu's grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

Our Homeschool, Week 29: "Robots"

We just completed our Robots unit...there were way more activities that we wanted to do but we're adjusting supplements around here, and that makes for a cranky Bu. I tend to go a little easier on him with schooling when he's having a rough week because we still keep our regular 16 hours of therapy a week.

We introduced the concept of clocks this week. Bu needs help putting them in order when he has to go in a circle, but he has no problem putting the numbers in order in a straight line. We read a couple books about robots, watched a video about the scientific method, and played with our letter recognition and robot apps.

The painting with gears is something I hoped to do, but we didn't get around to it. We're going to do a painting activity this week to make up for it. We also did more letter recognition activities with magnets, worked on puzzles, lacing beads, and stacking robots. So much fun and coordination/fine motor practice!

Our Homeschool, Week 28: "Earth Day"

This week, we followed our Earth Day board.

We had a lot of fine motor practice this week. Puzzles, color sorting with wooden beads, and magnet play. With the magnets, I lined up the entire uppercase alphabet and had Bu match the corresponding lowercase letter. I might try this again in the reverse, since I noticed I usually have him match the lowercase to uppercase letters rather than vice versa.

We watched the Extraordinary Earth episode of Rachel and the Treeschoolers. We also caught the Earth Day special of Bubble Guppies, Bu is a big fan of the characters. We had another sticker activity where we decorated a park scene with trees, plants and insects. Lastly, it wasn't part of our "curriculum", but Bu found a puzzle of a map of America, and he asked to try it. I was shocked that he correctly matched 10 states (albeit not always properly oriented) before he lost interest.

Our Homeschool, Week 27: "Construction"

This past week, we worked on our "Construction" board. We've had construction across the street for almost 2 years now, and Bu loves watching the machines work from our porch. I had a feeling he'd enjoy this theme!

We worked on fine motor skills with our Nuts and Bolts set, worked on a brand new "tool set" themed puzzle, and built up towers with our cardboard bricks to learn about the concepts of "up" and "down". We also watched an episode of Magic School Bus that corresponded to the theme of the week.

We worked on our first ever interlocking-piece puzzle this week. We also read lots of books about buildings and structures. We had a lot of fun with this theme!

Our Homeschool, Week 26: "The Five Senses"

This week, our theme was the Five Senses = touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing.

We had a short week, because we had to travel upstate for our annual specialist appointment. Our schooling mainly consisted of field trips, but we made it a point to label everything we touched, saw, heard and smelled...and had an interesting "taste" experience when Bu realized ocean water was salty. He bit me through my shirt while we were swimming at Cocoa Beach! LOL
I look forward to revisiting this theme next year, when Bu is a bit older and maybe ready for more in-depth activities. The great thing about this theme is that there's always a new way to apply what you learn!

Currently...

Haven't done one of these in a while, so I thought I'd do one from Melbourne!

Doing: laying on a hotel bed with my son and husband

Watching: "The Waterboy"

Learning: that we all fit comfortably on a queen size bed, but not for long lol

Thinking about: Bu's specialist appointment tomorrow morning

Eating: nothing now, but we'll be having Chick Fil-A for the first time tonight.

Loving: the calm I'm feeling now, i.e. Before the storm

Anticipating: getting the appointment done so we can take Bu to Cocoa Beach, and then Disney next week!

Our Homeschool, Week 25: "Circus"

We had our Circus theme last week...unfortunately, Bu was sick (and actually still is) so we didn't do a whole lot. I'm earmarking this theme to use again at the end of our "year". An advantage of homeschooling is being able to move things around as we need to!

Here's a bunch of activities I had printed out, but I'm just going to save this in our binder until later :)

We tried out Time4Learning this week. Bu liked the activities we tried, but he was frustrated with operating the mouse. He was clicking the scroll-wheel and moving the whole page instead of clicking the button to select, and so this didn't last very long. I was able to keep him more engaged with this than with the ABCMouse, though, so it looks like we're going to need to get a new mouse!

Here's an example of some the work he did in therapy this week, too. He is asked "where is the circle? where is the triangle?" and he has to place a sticker on the shape he's asked for. He got 100% right independently! He's also doing great on his independent circle drawing, and they've started working on window panes so he can practice making crossed lines. The first one was the therapist, and the last one was Bu and her together, but the other 4 windows were Bu independently. Not bad at all for his first try! He's also been practicing ordering numbers from 0-9. He tends to get the 8 and 9 backwards, but otherwise, he's got it! We also bought a custom jigsaw puzzle with Bu's (real) name as the puzzle pieces. He loves it and it's going to make it very easy for him to learn to spell and recognize his name. A great example of using the way your child likes to learn to your advantage!

Here's hoping Bu feels better soon so we can get to work on our next theme!

Our Homeschool, Week 24: "Easter"

It's crazy to think that we're already 6 months into the "school year". It seems impossible for the time to have gone by so quickly!

We went with an Easter theme last week, since Easter was over the weekend! We did a lot of reading, including a favorite Leslie Patricelli book as our "bathtime book of the week". Above, you can also see a matching activity we printed out, and a fun game we played over and over with plastic easter eggs. I painted a cardboard egg carton with different dabs of paint, then Bu matched a plastic egg to the color in each cup. He did this activity several times in a row, he loves all things matching.

The Easter Bunny left Bu a puzzle and some books. We dyed eggs and had an egg hunt for the first time. We also spent some time playing our cousin's piano. Bu has a real knack/affinity for music! We played with some magnets and did a painting craft back home. We had a lot of fun this week!

Our Homeschool, Week 23: "St. Patrick's Day"

Last week was St. Patrick's Day, so we decided to dedicate the week to this holiday!

We had a few interactive worksheets that we used to practice number and letter recognition. We also practiced counting 1-4 and matching shapes.

We got a LOT of new books this week. We also downloaded a bunch of educational apps, thanks to Bu's scholarship. We found one we love called "Endless Reader" that lets him practice spelling and sight word recognition. Bu made a rainbow with Do-a-Dot markers and gluing cotton balls and foam. He was really into it! We were expecting a sensory meltdown but he really enjoyed this activity.

Our Homeschool, Week 22: "Under the Sea"

This week, we had an ocean/under the sea theme!

We had fun with this theme! Bu loves the water and sea creatures. We read a book about Medusa (not exactly on theme, but still fun) and did a sticker activity (art and sensory) similar to what we did a while back with the dinosaurs. Another sensory activity involved putting ocean-themed puzzle pieces in a bin full of sand for Bu to "fish" out!

We did some starfish counting and watched an episode of Magic School Bus called "Takes a Dive" to learn about coral reefs. We also took another field trip to the zoo to check the giant fish tank out (and to play in the splash pad, of course). We completed the week worth exploring the "undersea" wildlife in the inflatable pool out back ;) A great example of how learning can happen anywhere!

Our Homeschool, Week 21: "Spring"

This week, we had fun with Spring!

We did a lot of work with printables this week. We made our own shape puzzle, sorted mnipulatives by color on caterpillars, and matched uppercase letter magnets to lowercase raindrops.

We also had plenty of fun with puzzles, as always. We finished the week with a trip to the zoo that included a scavenger hunt with our "zoo animal' puzzle.

Our Homeschool, Week 20: "Flowers"

This is almost a 2 week long theme, because the two themes are very similar. Next week, we are doing Spring themed activities, and this week, we learned about flowers.

He was really engaged in Signing Time this week, so we watched a LOT of that, plus the Treeschoolers episode on Flowers and Trees. I'm planning to do an actual review on the Treeschoolers series in an upcoming post. Some of the other activities we did included sorting flowers and magnets by color, building a flower out of shapes, and sorting the letter F (for Flower) by uppercase and lowercase. Lastly, we introduced the Melissa & Doug Spelling Game and Bu LOVED it! He got the hang of placing the puzzle pieces in order really quickly, which is useful as a basis for spelling later.

Our Homeschool, Week 19: "Pets"

We just finished our "Pets" week! There were lots of fun pet-themed activities that we found on Pinterest, here are a few of the ones we did!

Bu practiced shape recognition with his OT...she asked him questions like "where is the triangle?" and then Bu would put a sticker in the triangle shape. This helped his fine motor control and was also sensory (he hates stickers), plus it obviously helped with his shapes and vocabulary. We practiced color recognition and matching by putting "puppies" in their matching "dog houses". And of course, Bu played with his Pets puzzle a LOT, it's one of his favorites!

He did some sight word flashcards this week on his iPad. We did an activity where we practiced differentiating between upper and lowercase letters. I don't think this was a great choice of letter (P is so similar in both variations that it wasn't very interesting) but I really like the idea of the activity. We did some color sorting in "goldfish bowls" and even more puzzles!

We also just signed up for ABC Mouse. I'm looking forward to getting Bu interested in doing computer work, and I like that the activities start at "toddler level" so we can build from basics.

#SelfLoveSunday

As many of you know, I've been a HAES advocate and blogger forEVER. When I was pregnant with my son, I was interviewed by NBC for a news story regarding OBs refusing to take patients strictly based on BMI. I argued that weight & health are not always linked, and that these practices were discriminatory. One of the comments my story later received was "good luck keeping up with your kid at a playground at that weight"

Here we are, almost 5 years later. I weigh exactly what I weighed when I got pregnant, and yet here I am, playing with my son and having a blast. This weekend we ran, climbed ropes and slid down slides for hours together. We had a great time!

Long story short, don't ever let anyone tell you "you can't"...especially because of your weight!

Our Homeschool, Week 18: "Valentine's Day"

It took a while, but I'm here to tell you about our Valentine's week! We've been busy, so I haven't really gotten a chance to blog. We had a lot of fun this week, there's such a wealth of ideas for activities that have a Valentine's theme online.

Bu did a lot of crafts this week, making Valentine's for me with his therapists and vice versa. We also had a LOT of fun sorting colors on hearts, matching uppercase with lowercase letters, and especially sorting chocolate shapes! He insisted on doing that last one over and over, he really liked it! We rounded out our Valentine's week with Signing Time videos that showed us signs for different feelings, and also signs for friends and family members.

Our Homeschool, Week 17: "Zoo"

We just did our Zoo themed week...I'd been looking forward to this for a month, because I knew it meant a field trip was in order! Unfortunately, Bu caught a cold from one of his therapists, so we had to take it easy this week. We did our usual puzzles, sing-a-longs and Signing Time. We also used a new toy to strengthen our counting.

Thankfully, he was feeling better by the end of the week, so we were able to do our field trip after all! We had such a great time, pointing out all the animals and running around. It was a perfect (and rare) 65 degree day, so it was nice out for us AND the animals!

Currently...

Reading: about to start on "Disconnected Kids"...I have a book in mind to read each month for the rest of the year, but I want to read the autism-specific ones ASAP so I can discuss them with our specialist in April

Working on: roasting a chicken

Watching: "Meet the Phonics: Blends" per Bu's request...but when I'm able, I'm on season 2 of Sherlock and hubs and I are on season 3 of Star Trek: TNG

Thinking about: how I wish my son felt better. He's had a bad cold for days and it's starting to look like I might be next

Eating: so much chicken. I'm a little over chicken.

Looking Forward To: DAPPER DAY AT DISNEY! FLORIDA SUPER CON! COCOA BEACH! SEA WORLD! But most urgently, Bu being well again!!!

Our Homeschool, Week 16: "Birds"

This week, we did activities from our Birds board. We watched an episode of Magic School Bus that taught us about cold-blooded animals, and reviewed our ASL alphabet. We also continued our uppercase/lowercase letter recognition.

My friend Rachel brought us some pine cones from up north, so we could do this bird craft! I cut the eyes, beak and wings from felt and hot-glued them onto the pine cone. Bu then helped me pick up small pom-poms (working on pincer grip for fine motor and also sensory tolerance) and pushing them into the crevices. It wasn't his favorite thing lol but it's cute!

Next week, we're doing a Zoo theme! I'm very excited because if the weather permits, we're going to have a field trip!

Homeschooling Materials...a few of our favorite things

I often get asked by mommas that are considering homeschooling about our curriculum. Where to buy, how to use, how to choose! Of course, I'm not an expert. We're not at any particular grade level yet, and my "curriculum" is cobbled together from Pinterest, random ideas I get, and favorite educational toys. So I thought, for this post, I would share some of our favorite learning materials. Our MVPs, if you will, that get the most use.

Bu loves anything alphabet related, so this matching game has gotten some love lately. I like a lot of the Match-It brand games for educational activities that don't feel like "work". We have the ENTIRE series of Preschool Prep DVDs (Bu's favorite) and we recently added the entire series of Signing Time DVDs and the entire series of Magic School Bus. Bu is a very visual kid and he loves music, so Preschool Prep and (most) Signing Time DVDs are right up his alley. MSB is still a bit over his head, but I love them and I like to incorporate the show into our themed lessons wherever appropriate. And of course, we have LOADS of puzzles and books. Bu doesn't particularly care for sitting still and being read to, but he loves "reading" on his own, which is a great foundation to build on as he gets older. Puzzles are his absolute favorite thing, so we play with them ALL THE TIME and always have a bunch scattered throughout the house. We like to use them not just for matching and coordination, but also for describing attributes and labeling to help with speech and vocabulary.

We also have a LOT of workbooks for a family that doesn't do much paper "work". I am notorious for picking up any workbook I find at the Dollar Tree or Target and trying to figure how I might use it "one day"...As a result, I have a bunch of preschool curriculum ready to go for when we decide to focus more on worksheets, and I also have some stuff ranging to third grade level just because I wanted a complete set and didn't want to risk not finding the books later when I'd need them. I probably need an intervention. In any case, you can see our collection of workbooks above.

As I just mentioned, one of my favorite places to buy teaching materials is at Target. These items were available at the dollar section last week. I love going at least once a week to Target and checking out what's new, as their stock is constantly changing. Many of the activities I come up with are inspired by something I'll pick up here that I otherwise would never have thought of doing! Part of homeschooling is finding learning opportunities anywhere, sometimes without even trying ;)

I hope that was helpful to anyone starting out! Please let me know if you have specific questions, and I'll do my best to answer or direct you to the appropriate resource! :)

Our Homeschool, Week 15: "My Family"

This week, our theme was taken from My Family board. We mostly did a lot of puzzles (as usual) and watched a couple different Signing Time videos. We also worked on color recognition with our Family Counters again and brought out an oldie but a goodie, the peg board! We tried a new activity too, a matching game to teach him to put uppercase and lowercase letters together. He did great (while he was interested) and I'm looking forward to adding these to our regular rotation of activities.

Another thing we worked on was identifying family members (to go with the theme). I have photos of myself, Daddy, grandpa and grandma laminated as our therapy materials. I only have these family members for now because they're the people that he sees most. I showed him two photos at a time and asked him "where's momma?" so he'd have to pick my photo, and so on. He does this activity regularly in speech and ABA, but it was nice to practice with him.

Next week, we using our Birds board. Hope you all have a great week!

(Unfounded) Homeschooling Pressures...

I was looking back through my instagram feed (#bubuhomeschool) and realized that it's been 67 weeks since we officially started our at-home lessons. I used to try to fit in so many more activities each day back then, and I also had a lot more of a battle to get Bu interested in learning.

Some of that might be his maturity and the fact that it was a new thing back then, but I think a lot of it is also that there's not as much pressure these days. When we started, my son was getting 8 hours a week of therapy, and I felt that wasn't enough. The fact that I don't have any typical children Bu's age around me as a basis for comparison (not that comparison is ever a great idea) also made me wonder if I was doing enough...

These days, Bu is doing 16 hours a week of therapy. That's at least 2-4 hours every weekday of ONE-ON-ONE structured learning time. The fact that I know he's practicing colors, matching, etc with his therapists and challenging himself cognitively has helped me to ease up on forcing too much "academic" stuff at home. I have always known that children up to the age of 6-7 learn most by playing, but I finally started to BELIEVE it when I realized recently just HOW MUCH my son knows!

The fact that we haven't been using worksheets lately and Bu is doing so great has led me to think that we're going to ease up on them altogether around here for the time being. Bu does way better with visuals and manipulatives than he does trying to follow directions on a piece of paper. It's always a great advantage in homeschooling to know HOW your child learns best and how they most ENJOY learning.

I was also reading a "preschool complete curriculum" book last night (which prompted this post) and in the "parents guide" section, there was a page that was titled "what you can expect from your 4 year old". I typically hate reading things like this because it only reminds me of the things Bu isn't quite at age-level with, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Bu can do many of these things (recognize letters, 6 different colors, 3 different shapes) and THEN some! What most struck me is that at four years old, "your child's attention span is longer and they can now work 10-15 minutes straight".

Bu works for hours a day! We've been doing 10-15 minutes of activity daily (plus therapy) since right after his third birthday, and I thought most days that it was just not enough. Turns out, he's actually ahead of the curve!

It can sometimes be a little scary, know that your child's education is entirely in your hands...but seeing how great he's actually doing (even compared to neurotypical kids his age) justifies to me that we're on the right track! Maybe I need to relax and just high five my awesome kid for being on this journey with me.

Magic City Comic Con 2016

This last weekend, I was able to go to Magic City Comic Con! My brother frequents these conventions, but this was only my second one ever. My first was many MANY years ago and was nowhere near as big and fun as MCCC!

I met all sorts of people and took pictures with some of the guests that made my favorite costumes. I also met Billie Piper, Jenna Coleman and Peter Davison and got a photo taken with them! The most fun part was all the Q&As, especially the one with Brent Spiner! And of course, there was the costume contest. I was hoping to stay until the shadow cast performance of Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I hadn't eaten all day (eating paleo while out and about isn't easy) so I started to feel ill.

I had a great time, and I can't wait for the next local convention!
